BLOG POST NO.3

A paragraph describing what you feel is important (to you) about the piece you chose–how does it contribute to your knowledge and what specifically does it offer you are a future practitioner, scholar, and expert?

Schmelzer, R. (2019, October 31). Should We Be Afraid of AI? Retrieved from https://www.forbes.com/sites/cognitiveworld/2019/10/31/should-we-be-afraid-of-ai/#120ca3164331

I love pieces like this because in today’s age, we often don’t stop and ask ourselves if we should be doing something. If this thing would be beneficial to the world. If we are going to negatively impact our future. In AI’s case, for me, I think it is our future, and thus it is a good thing to try and get there faster. But I am glad that some people are asking these questions, because it gives people like me to stop and take a look at what we are actually creating.

A PARAGRAPH DESCRIBING WHAT YOU FEEL IS IMPORTANT (TO YOU) ABOUT THE PIECE YOU CHOSE– HOW DOES IT CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND WHAT SPECIFICALLY DOES IT OFFER YOU AS A FUTURE PRACTITIONER, SCHOLAR, AND EXPERT?

Van Langen, P. H. G., & Brazier, F. M. T. (2006). Design space exploration revisited. Artificial Intelligence for Engineering Design, Analysis and Manufacturing20, 113–119.

This piece discusses implications Artificial Intelligence can have on space exploration and furthering man’s reach in our galaxy. The article discusses how machine learning can create better, more streamline proceedings when it comes to interstellar travel. Most spacecrafts are unmanned, they are actually being piloted by algorithms and systems put in place; otherwise known as Artificial Intelligence. As time progresses, we will be able to do more and travel farther in space by harnessing the power of machine learning and Artificiall Intelligence.

Prabu, J., Narmadha, J., & Jeyaprakash, K. (2014). Artificial Intelligence Robotically Assisted Brain Surgery, 4(5), 9–14.

The piece I chose is regarding the assistance of Artificial Intelligence in brain surgeries. The article explains how newfound methods in the field of Artificial Intelligence can benefit the medical community, specifically when it comes to complex and intricate procedures such as brain surgery. For me, this piece demonstrates one of the most enticing functionalities of AI: perfection. A functioning AI can operate at a much higher level than any human brain, so offering surgeries completely ran by robots can eliminate human error, which unfortunately can occur do to our species’ imperfection.

WHAT IS YOUR MAJOR OR CHOSEN FIELD AND WHAT WORK THAT IS BEING DONE IN THAT FIELD IS EXCITING OR INSPIRING TO YOU?

Hi, my name is Stone Steadman and I am a second year Computer Science Major here at Appalachian State University. I found Computer Science in high-school, senior year; and since then it has been my main interest. I find so many different branches of the major to be extremely enticing, but nothing can come close to my absolute fascination with Artificial Intelligence. I love this field because I love what it means for the human race. We are now able to create machines that can think, literally think. AI is used in almost every aspect of our lives today, and it is only getting better and more refined by the hour. AI’s can now fly planes, drive cars, cook food; the list goes on and on. Nothing can stop it now, and that is what attracts me. The finality of it, the fact that we know we are creating a means to our own destruction, but yet we press on anyways. It is perfect chaos, and I can’t wait to be a part of it.
